Huntington Beach calls itself Surf City USA and holds the trademark to prove it. George Freeth gave a surfing demonstration at the pier in 1914, and the sport never left. Each summer the U.S. Open of Surfing sets up on the sand beside the pier, and a small museum downtown keeps boards and photographs from the early days.
